On May 10, 1643, the Massachusetts General Court divided the state into 4 counties, one of which being Middlesex County, named for Middlesex, England. The rich history of this county dates back to the American Revolutionary War, as many important battles were fought on this land. Two of these were the very first battles in the war for independence - the battles at Lexington and Concord. These two battles, fought in 1775, was the result of tensions between the 13 colonies and the British authorities, and are commemorated by monuments today. But these two towns aren’t the only ones in Middlesex County that were important to the Revolutionary War - Arlington, Cambridge, and Lincoln also were pivotal in the fight for American Independence. In addition to this, many notable authors lived in Middlesex County, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
