While Suffolk County may span only 58 square miles of land (plus 62 square miles of water), it has over 800,000 residents, making it the 4th most populous county in Massachusetts. This county is made up of only four cities - Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. Just like Middlesex County, Suffolk County was one of the 4 original counties that were created by the Massachusetts General Court in May 1643. It is home to Boston, Massachusetts, the capital city and largest city in both Massachusetts and all of New England. Suffolk County borders Essex County to the north, Norfolk County to the south, Middlesex County to the west, and Massachusetts Bay to the east.
The name “Suffolk” means “southern folk,” and is named after Suffolk, England. This county, while formed in 1643, was chopped up piece by piece to create other counties, eventually becoming parts of Worcester County, Norfolk County, and Plymouth County. But Suffolk County still contains Boston, which has been the heart of Massachusetts for centuries. Important historical events such as the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre took place here, as well as many of the events of the American Revolution. So many of these historical buildings still stand in the city today perched along the Freedom Trail, including Paul Revere’s house, Park St Church, and Faneuil Hall, and so many more. As one of the oldest cities in America, you don’t need to look far to find a bit of history.
